Utility-scale battery energy storage is a critical component to achieving our decarbonization objectives while maintaining a reliable and resilient power grid. Deployment of utility-scale battery storage in the U.S. is accelerating rapidly; however, local siting and permitting decisions are increasingly challenged or delayed due to community concerns about safety and fire risks.

In this program, project developers will share their experiences and best practices for navigating the permitting process for battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects. They will also share current challenges BESS projects face, including project opposition tactics, use of misinformation, and trends in local ordinances aimed at blocking development and construction of BESS projects.

During this PowerCast, attendees will learn:

  • Best practices for communicating with local permitting officials
  • How to explain new/challenging concepts to community stakeholders
  • How to build rapport and trust with community members
  • How to navigate project/community opposition with productive solutions
