New analysis from ACP shows that the U.S. faces a growing gap between rising energy demand and power supply. Clean energy is currently the fastest and cheapest resource to deploy and solve our country’s reliability and affordability problem.

Key data analysis:

  • Clean energy has comprised 82% of capacity added in the U.S. on average over the past 5 years.
  • Preventing coal retirements would only provide 15% of the electricity needed to support demand growth and would increase costs and challenge grid reliability due to the age of most of these facilities.
  • The country would need to build enough natural gas-fired capacity to power the equivalent of 11 million American homes (20 GW) each year to meet demand growth. That many turbines simply aren’t available. Those that are available come with a hefty price tag.
