NFPA 855: Improving Energy Storage System Safety

The 2026 edition of NFPA 855 updates safety and installation requirements for stationary energy storage systems (ESS), with a strong focus on lithium-ion battery systems under Chapter 9. New provisions address modern safety needs, including mandatory large-scale fire testing, improved guidance on explosion control, and alignment with recent changes to NFPA 1 and the International Fire Code.

These updates reinforce the standard’s role as the national baseline for permitting and regulating ESS projects.
