In 2025, developers in the U.S. commissioned 50,344 MW of utility-scale solar, wind, and storage capacity, setting a record for the strongest installation of operating clean power in a single year.

Total operational clean power capacity in the U.S. ended the year at 363,301 MW, providing enough electricity to power the equivalent of 79 million American homes each year.

Solar, storage, and wind projects accounted for just over 90% of all new power capacity added to the U.S. power grid in 2025. This is the second consecutive year where these three technologies have delivered over 90% of new capacity. Since 2020, solar, storage, and wind installations have accounted for at least 75% of new capacity each year. 

For the fourth year in a row, solar was the dominant fuel type brought online in 2025. New utility-scale solar capacity totaled 27 GW, representing nearly 50% of annual additions. 

Utility-scale wind and solar provide nearly 17% of the nation’s electricity, on par with coal and nuclear generation. Total generation from wind and solar hits nearly 19% when including behind-the-meter solar generation.   

Eighteen states generated more than 20% of their electricity from all wind and solar resources, while 28 states generated at least 10% from these clean power resources.  

In 2025, the clean power industry directly employed more than 437,000 Americans – and acted as an economic pillar for communities, revitalizing local economies.  

Broader economic activity around the clean energy industry supports more than 1.4 million jobs nationwide. In a highly intricate economy like the U.S., economic activities from the clean power industry ripple through other industries, households, and the government sector. For every job directly employed in clean power, it supports an estimated 2.8 jobs in wind, 2.4 jobs in offshore wind, and 2.0 jobs in battery storage and solar. 

The clean power industry invested a record $79 billion in new projects during the year.  

For the fourth straight year solar dominated the annual investment numbers, representing $51B of the total $79B invested in 2025 alone. Battery storage investment continues to climb, reaching almost $15B in investment from projects that came online in 2025 and accounting for over $56B cumulatively. 

Additionally, operational clean power projects generated over $6 billion annually through tax and land lease payments, which directly support public schools, fire departments, and other vital community services. 

The clean power industry fuels infrastructure development, job creation, and local economic growth. Overall, the U.S. clean power industry contributed over $150 billion to the U.S. economy in 2025, a value-add equivalent to New Mexico’s GDP.   

Solar contributed almost half of the total value at $73 billion, followed by land-based wind at $43 billion, battery storage at $32 billion, and offshore wind $2 billion. 

Clean power is everywhere. Clean power projects can be found in all 50 states and 89% of congressional districts. Operating projects are spread across 94% of Republican-held congressional districts and 85% of Democratic-held districts.  

There are 243 districts that have at least 100 MW of clean power capacity installed, while 93 districts are home to 1 GW or more of operational clean power capacity. 

Notably, 79% of installed clean power capacity is in districts represented by Republicans, including 19 of the top 20 districts by capacity.

Just 46 congressional districts do not have any utility-scale clean energy projects in operation. Eight of these districts have projects that are under construction or in advanced development, while the majority of the remainder are highly urbanized districts.
