Sen. Bennet tours factories, pushing jobs and PTC extension
U.S. Sen. Michael Bennett (D-Colo.) toured the factory of a wind turbine manufacturer earlier this week and reiterated his call for extension of wind power's primary incentive, the federal wind energy production tax credit (PTC). In a visit to Leitner-Poma of America, based in Grand Junction, he noted, “It's nice to see things stamped made here in America.”
Colorado, Bennet added, has seen thousands of new jobs from the wind power industry, and businesses need policy certainty to preserve those jobs and create more by investing in more factories. Referring to Washington, D.C., and the ongoing struggle to extend the PTC, he said, “I call that place 'The Land of Flickering Lights' sometimes because the standard of success is 'Did we keep the lights on another two months,' Business in this country and the people employed by business in this country can't stand that kind of uncertainty.”
A House bill seeking to extend the PTC has 90 cosponsors, including 20 Republicans, and has received the endorsement of a broad coalition of more than 370 members, including the National Association of Manufacturers, the American Farm Bureau Federation, the Edison Electric Institute, and the Western Governors’ Association, while a Senate bill to extend it was introduced March 15 by seven Senators (of whom Sen. Bennet was one), including three Republicans. A PTC extension also has the support of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the bipartisan Governors’ Wind Energy Coalition, which includes 23 Republican and Democratic Governors from across the U.S.
