Kansas City Star backs PTC extension, praises Brownback, Moran

In an editorial Wednesday, the Kansas City Star supported an extension of the federal wind energy Production Tax Credit (PTC) and praised Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) and U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kans.) for backing it as well.

The editorial noted that Kansas is seeing more wind farms being installed, and that the Kansas Corporation Commission recently approved a private company's proposal to build a major transmission line to carry electricity from windy western Kansas to Indiana.  It also cited AWEA's finding that the Sunflower State led the nation in new wind projects under construction at the end of 2011, with nearly 1,200 megawatts (MW) in the pipeline (enough to power the equivalent of 300,000 homes).

It added, “As the wind industry in Kansas gets to be good business, that means jobs are being created. And that helps explain why Brownback and Moran are speaking up to expand it in the state.  In addition, Moran properly wants to retain the wind energy production tax credit in Congress. He notes that the credit would help build confidence in more construction of this alternative form of clean energy.”
