Breezing up: Wind is largest electricity source in Spain in March

In March, wind power topped the list of electricity sources in Spain for the first time, generating 4.7 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) or 21% of the country's electricity.  Energy Matters, an Australian website, has the story, drawing on a news release from Red Electrica de Espana (REE), Spain's utility system operator.

Jose Donoso, President of the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE), is quoted as saying the wind generation for March was sufficient to power the equivalent of 13 million average Spanish households, or to meet the entire electricity demand of the neighboring country of Portugal for the month.

Adds the article, "Spain is one of the world's largest wind power producers and the fourth largest net exporter of electricity and the nation exported 8.3 [billion kWh] of electricity last year. Even with the large proportion of renewables, electricity prices in the Spanish market were among the cheapest in Europe in 2010."
