AWWI releases new Issue Brief on eagle protection and wind power

The American Wind Wildlife Institute (AWWI) recently announced the release of a new Issue Brief on Eagle Conservation, Research, and Wind Energy. The Brief provides an overview of some of the regulations related to eagle conservation and wind energy development, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's 2009 Eagle Rule and the proposed extension of the permit duration.

The Issue Brief also covers the purpose of the Service's Eagle Conservation Plan Guidance, which is intended to aid wind developers in developing the conservation plans (including estimating take levels and avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures that will be employed to fully offset the anticipated take) that form the basis for obtaining permits for eagle take under the 2009 rule.

Finally, the Issue Brief outlines a few of the ongoing research priorities for eagles in the context of wind energy development.
